South Campus Perspectives from Municipal Election Candidates

Sunday, September 01, 2013 9:13 AM | Cory Doll

We are asking local mayoral and councillor candidates for their perspectives on coordinated south campus planning.  We will post responses here as they are received. Here is our question to them:

As University development falls outside city planning processes, what leadership will you take to ensure that the developments associated with South Campus enhance vibrant communities and contribute to Edmonton’s broader goals?

I am in agreement with Cory's comments. I believe that in making changes that stand to significantly impact the quality of life of community residents, my university should be a leader in working with the very citizens who support it by making inclusive, ethical, collaborative and evidence based decisions. To date, the University of Alberta seems to take a freewheeling, unilateral, patchwork small picture view in it's decisions regarding the leasing and development of land in Michener Park, Golf Lands and South Campus. Needless to say, this style of leadership and planning from my University does not serve Albertans well. It is not representative of the calibre of University I want to support as an Albertan. I wonder what you might offer to assist our community in working with the University to attenuate this approach? Thank you.
